Wrightington Hospital NHS Trust and Wigan and Leigh Health Services NHS Trust merged with effect from 1st April, 2001 to form Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Trust. Wrightington Hospital forms the Musculo-Skeletal Division of the new merged Trust. Last November, the Hospital received recognition as an NHS Treatment Centre.
Wrightington Hospital is a name familiar to all Orthopaedic Surgeons following the studies in total hip joint replacement which were carried out by the late Professor Sir John Charnley Wrightington stands in a pleasant stretch of open countryside between Wigan and Southport, in extensive grounds formerly the estate of Wrightington Hall. The Hospital is readily accessible from the national motorway network, situated just half a mile from Junction 27 of the M6 motorway. There is easy access to the Lake District, North Wales, Peak District and the University cities of Manchester and Liverpool.
Comprising 145 beds, the Hospital incorporates the Hip Centre, Upper Limb Unit as well as a 17 bedded Rheumatology Unit and a 19 bedded private patient Unit, servicing all specialties - the John Charnley Wing. The majority of patients are suffering from arthritis and related conditions and are under the care of an Orthopaedic Surgeon or a Rheumatologist.
The Trust is delighted to announce that the Upper Limb Team led by Professor John Stanley won the Hospital Doctor Surgical Team of the Year award for 2004.
This post is suitable for surgeons with a special interest in Hand, Shoulder and Elbow Surgery and has PMETB and SAC approval for Higher Surgical Training purposes.
Fellowships are available for six months or one year.
This post is suitable for surgeons with special interests in Hand, Elbow and Shoulder Surgery. Elective Hand Surgery covers arthritis, post trauma reconstruction, routine tendon and nerve surgery and the management of Dupuytren's disease. The Arthritis surgery accounts for 60% of the work and there is a busy Rheumatology Unit on site with 3 Rheumatologists. We also now have a trauma input both as acute primary from the Wigan site, and a busy tertiary referral pattern of primary and delayed reconstruction. Research and its publication will be regarded as an integral part of the job. There are now 8 operating theatres which deal with approximately 6,600 cases per year and a post operative Recovery Unit which accommodates 13 patients for overnight care immediately following surgery.
A £3.2 million scheme has recently been completed which provides a twin theatre suite and an 18 bedded unit for the Upper limb unit The new unit is a state of the art facility for the management of orthopaedic patients. It comprises a twin theatre suite with laminar flow air systems to reduce infection rates, accompanying anaesthetic rooms, a recovery area and two ward areas for day case and intermediate care. Hearnden Mr. V. Kumar (Plastics) a. To work as part of a team with the other Fellows on the Unit, working closely with and under the supervision of the eight Upper Limb Consultants. b. Ward work, clerking of new admissions, routine ward rounds, follow ups. The Fellow will be expected to be responsible for all day to day care of patients of the Consultant(s) to whom he/she is assigned. c. Attendance at Out-patient clinics with the Consultant
d. Operating Sessions
e. Checking pathology and radiology reports and ensuring that appropriate action is taken.
f. Personally contacting laboratory technicians on call when they are required in cases of emergency.
g. Informing physiotherapists as necessary regarding the treatment of patients on the wards.
h. Writing discharge form letters and liasing with GP's as necessary, regarding discharges and legibly completing outcome proformas in outpatient clinics.
i. Collecting and presenting data for Medical Audit meetings.
j. Signing death certificates and personally notifying deaths to the HM Coroner where necessary and after discussions with the Consultant, if required.
k. To facilitate medical audit junior medical staff must keep medical records in the manner prescribed by their Consultant/ Division. l. Fellows will be expected to accompany Consultant colleagues to the neighbouring Hospitals of Wigan Infirmary, Alder Hey Children's Hospital and Booth Hall Children's Hospital, Manchester on a rotational basis to undertake operating sessions and attend out-patient clinics).
m. Cover for colleagues in Orthopaedic Unit during periods of leave.
These duties apply in common to Wrightington's NHS and private patients. The contracted hours attached to this post are as follows:

Two SpR's are taken and appointed by the Mersey and Manchester Deaneries. These posts will be responsible for on call for trauma on the Wigan site after 5 pm and weekends 1 in 10.
(I) All applications for annual leave, statutory holidays and days in lieu should be approved by the Consultants and submitted on the appropriate form to the Personnel Department at least six weeks prior to the period of leave.
(ii) Only two doctors should be on annual/study leave at any one time so as to facilitate cover by colleagues.
The Junior doctor accepts that he will also perform duties in occasional emergencies and unforseen circumstances at the request of the appropriate Consultant, in consultation where practicable with his colleagues both Senior and Junior. It has been agreed between the profession and the Department that while Juniors accept that they will perform such duties, the Secretary of State stresses that additional commitments arising under this subsection are exceptional and, in particular, that Juniors should not be required to undertake work of this kind for prolonged periods or on a regular basis.
(a) There is a Postgraduate Centre and a Medical Reference Library.
(b) Study leave may be available for attendance at relevant courses. Applications must be agreed by the Consultants and are subject to the needs of the service. Applications must be made at least 6 weeks in advance.
(c) Each Fellow will have an educational supervisor.
(d) Educational opportunities offered for this post will be both formal and informal which will take the form of 1 conference per week, formal appraisals, weekly presentations, journal clubs, teaching programmes run by all the consultants, presentations on radiology etc.
A lodging fee will be payable for voluntary resident practitioners in accordance with the Terms and Conditions of Service of Hospital Medical and Dental Staff. Married and single accommodation is available on site for which a rental is appropriate. (i) The terms and conditions of service applicable (including those relating to leave and sick pay) are set out in the Terms and Conditions of Service of Hospital Medical and Dental Staff (England and Wales) and the General Whitley Council as amended from time to time.
(ii) Registration with the General Medical Council and a certificate of Training in Radiological Protection is necessary.
(iii) Candidates who are offered a post must be prepared for enquiries to be made about their past and present state of health, and may be required to have a chest X-Ray and Medical Examination before the appointment is confirmed. (iv) All medical staff employed by this Trust are required to have enhanced CRB Disclosure. Please note
Recently, the House of Lords ruled that the Department of Health's guidance, which states that doctors living outside the European Union will not be eligible to apply for higher speciality training posts, is unlawful. All applications must now be treated equally whether they come from UK, EC or international graduates. At the moment, there are a number of requirements for doctors wishing to work in the UK. a. If you do not have the right to reside and work in the UK the only way this can be organised is with either a work permit or a Highly Skilled Migrant Workers visa. The former appliction is made by your employer after an offer of employment is made. The Trust will have to advertise the vacancy, and in accordance with Immigration rules we have to endeavour to appoint a UK national or EEU applicant. If an overseas candidate is appointed to the post, we have to demonstrate why someone in the former category is not suitable for the post. There is an excellent medical library on site with internet facilities and medline search. Wrightington's Librarian is available five days per week. We have a well stocked shop, which sells newspapers, soft drinks, sandwiches etc. A popular staff restaurant serving discounted meals and snacks to members of staff and an 'out of hours' service providing quickly microwaved meals for medical staff on call. Corporate membership deals are offered to staff at the local gym and Leisure Club. There are regular bus services from the Hospital to Wigan, Ormskirk, Preston and Skelmersdale.
